79.2 Configuring Secure Messaging Gateway

When configured and enabled in GroupWise Administration and in the Docker image, OpenText Secure Messaging Gateway (SMG) secures outgoing email messages in GroupWise Web by scanning the content of items composed in GroupWise Web before they are sent. This includes scans of both message content and attachments of composed Mail items. The “Send” action triggers the scan, but items are not actually sent until a successful scan completes.

With SMG configured and enabled, Mail items that fail a scan will not be sent. GroupWise Web users are notified when Mail items fail a scan. This gives them an opportunity to fix the security issue and try resending the item.

IMPORTANT:In the event that the SMG server is down or unreachable (after being enabled in GroupWise Administration), GroupWise Web users will be able to send Mail items without scanning, until the connection is restored. However, they will not be able to send items with attachments unless the Process attachments if scanning is interrupted setting is checked. If you select this option in the Secure Messaging Gateway configuration, users will be able to send items with or without attachments if the SMG connection is interrupted.

Before you can configure these settings, you will need know/have the following:

  • DNS Host name or IP address for the Secure Gateway server

  • Connection port to the SMG server

  • SMG application key

  • Access to the SMG CA certificate, if applicable

To enable and configure Secure Messaging Gateway:

  1. In the Administration Console, navigate to System > GroupWise Web > Secure Messaging Gateway.

  2. Check the Enabled box.

  3. Type the DNS Host Name for connecting to the Secure Gateway server.

  4. Add the connection port for the SMG server.

  5. Type or paste the SMG application key in the field provided.

  6. Click the browse button to navigate to, and add, the SMG CA certificate.

  7. (Optional) If you select Process attachments if scanning is interrupted, this will enable users to send items in GroupWise Web with both message content and attachments if the connection to the Secure Gateway server is down.

If you leave Process attachments if scanning is interrupted unselected, GroupWise Web users will still be able to send Mail items when SMG scanning is interrupted, but only without attachments.

IMPORTANT:For SMG to scan documents for GroupWise Web users, any GroupWise post office domains that are configured to use SMG, must also be registered with SMG in the Secure Messaging Gateway Management Console. For information, see Domain Management in the Secure Messaging Gateway Administrator's Guide.
