Connecting an IPX-Only Site to the Internet

In this scenario, Acme Company is running only IPX^TM on the network. Acme wants to use Novell BorderManager 3.8 to allow only intranet users to access and browse the Internet. Acme has the following requirements:

• Use only IPX and not require TCP/IP on workstations
• Allow only internal users to access the Internet
• Prevent Internet users from accessing or viewing the intranet
• Use dial on-demand to an ISP for the Internet connection

The following Novell BorderManager 3.8 components are used to implement this scenario, as shown in the following figure:

• Packet filtering
• Proxy Services Transparent proxy application
• Access control

To implement Novell BorderManager 3.8 to connect to the Internet, Acme Company must perform the following general sequence of steps:

1. Set up the Novell BorderManager 3.8 server to use dial on-demand routing to the ISP.
2. Install Novell BorderManager 3.8 and enable the default packet filters and access control during the installation.

3. Using NetWare Administrator, Novell BorderManager 3.8 Services page, enable and configure the Transparent proxy application.

4. Using NetWare Administrator, enable and configure access control rules for the intranet users.
