This document was updated in the following sections on the dates indicated:
November 13, 2002 = 1.1 (clarification: ZfD 3.2 Preboot Services updates integrated into SP1)
November 15, 2002 = 2.0 and suboordinates (added another step and clarification to the procedure for extracting the update file).
November 15, 2002 = 3.0 and suboordinates (rewrote to include information about overlaying ZfD 3.2 SP1 Client Update files to the Novell Client).
The ZENworks® for Desktops (ZfD) 3.2 Client Update download contains updates needed by workstations using the Novell® Client in conjunction with ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP1 server-side updates.
The purpose of the client update is to provide a bundle of client fixes that have been tested together but are not delivered with the Novell Client for Windows* NT*/2000 version 4.81, 4.82, or 4.83 SP1 or with the Novell Client for Windows 9x version 3.31 or 3.32 SP1. The ZfD 3.2 client update also includes changes that support the use of ZfD components on Windows XP Professional workstations. The ZfD 3.2 SP1 files have undergone component testing, core OS testing, internationalization testing, and integration testing with other Novell products.
The ZfD 3.2 SP1 client update is to be used in conjunction with the ZfD 3.2 SP1 server-side update. The server update can be downloaded from TID 2963839 at http://support.novell.com. For more information, refer to the Readme file, README_ZFD32SP1SERVER.TXT, that ships with the update.
Although ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 Preboot Services originally shipped as a separate product, files to update the shipping version of that product are included in this support pack.
The ZfD 3.2 SP1 client-side update (ZFD32SP1CLIENT.EXE) can be downloaded from TID 2963840 at http://support.novell.com. To download the update, complete the following steps:
IMPORTANT: Although you can copy the files to any directory you choose, if you use a Windows XP workstation to browse to the downloaded client update files, the Windows browser will not be able to find the files if any folder name in the path is longer than 8 characters.
IMPORTANT: If you chose to download ZFD32SP1CLIENT.EXE to a location that includes a space in the path, for example, C:\Documents and Settings\Tsmith\My Documents\My Downloads, the .EXE will fail to extract. To work around this problem, run the .EXE from a DOS command prompt.
Before you install the Client Update to any workstation, you must make sure that the Novell Client has already been installed there. The Client Update installation program checks the existing client installation on a workstation to verify which components are installed there.
Only those components that were previously installed are updated by the client update program. If you want to add other workstation components, you must run the Novell Client installation program and add these components prior to updating with the ZfD 3.2 SP 1 Client Update.
Make sure that you understand the software prerequisites for using this product in conjunction with ZfD 3.2 SP1. The prerequisite information is displayed in one of the the initial ZfD 3.2 SP1 server installation dialog boxes. You can also find it in the PREREQ.TXT file located in the ZENWORKS\NI\LICENSE\language\ folder of the server-side download package for ZfD 3.2 SP1.
The ZfD 3.2 SP1 Client Update is designed to work with the latest versions of the Novell Client:
If you are already using one of these versions of the client, proceed with the following steps to install Client Update ZfD files to the workstation you need to upgrade.
You can do this either by distributing it to workstations or users as an Application object or you can provide rights for the users to browse to the server location of ZENSP.EXE so they can run it at their convenience.
NOTE: End users will be able to run ZENSP.EXE only if they are members
of the Adminstrators group or if the Application object is configured to allow
ZENSP.EXE to
run at an unsecure system impersonation.
The ZENSP.EXE program copies updated files directly to the local workstation, then prompts the user to reboot the workstation and apply the update.
Before ZENSP.EXE is executed on a workstation, make sure that Remote Management sessions are not running.
The ZfD 3.2 SP1 Client Update is designed to work with the latest versions of the Novell Client:
If you have already installed Novell Client 3.32/4.83, you need to update it with Support Pack 1 (Client SP1) files that can be downloaded in a non-integrated format. That is, the support pack files ship independently from an updated 3.32/4.83 Novell Client.
You can download the non-integrated version of the Novell Client 4.83 Support Pack 1 files from TID 2963245 at the Novell Support Web site at http://support.novell.com.
You can download the non-integrated version of the Novell Client 3.32 Support Pack 1 files from TID 2963243 at the Novell Support Web site at http://support.novell.com.
To save the trouble of installing Client SP1, rebooting the workstation, then installing the ZfD 3.2 SP1 Client Update and rebooting a second time, you can overlay the ZfD 3.2 SP1 Client Update files in the Client SP1 installation directory. Using this overlay method, you need to run the client installation and reboot only once.
The following sections explain the steps you can take to perform the overlay in the appropriate Client SP1 directory.
When you have downloaded the non-integrated Client SP1 files to the directory where you will run the Client SP1 installation, use the following steps to overlay the ZfD 3.2 SP1 Client Update files to the same installation directory.
This will overlay the appropriate client files and provide a single client update installation directory.
When you have downloaded the non-integrated Client SP1 files to the directory where you will run the Client SP1 installation, use the following steps to overlay the ZfD 3.2 SP1 Client Update files to the same installation directory.
This will overlay the appropriate client files and provide a single client update installation directory.
The ZfD 3.2 SP1 Client Update is designed to work with the latest versions of the Novell Client. If you have not installed the Novell Client before, you need to use version 4.83 SP1 for Windows NT/2000/XP workstations or version 3.32 SP1 for Windows 95/98 workstations. Both of these versions integrate the latest Support Pack revisions (Client SP1).
You can download the integrated version of the Novell Client 4.83 Support Pack 1 files at the Novell Product downloads Web site at http://download.novell.com.
You can download the integrated version of the Novell Client 3.32 Support Pack 1 files at the Novell Product downloads Web site at http://download.novell.com.
When you have downloaded the integrated Client SP1 files to the directory where you will run the Client SP1 installation, use the following steps to overlay the ZfD 3.2 SP1 Client Update files to the same installation directory.
This will overlay the appropriate client files and provide a single client update installation directory.
In cases where both compressed and uncompressed versions of a file end up in the same directory, such as LOGINW32.DL_ and LOGINW32.DLL, the installation automatically installs the uncompressed file. It is not necessary to delete the compressed files.
Automatic Client Upgrade (ACU.EXE) requires the major or minor internal version in the UNATTEND.TXT file to be incremented. This incrementation triggers the ACU.EXE to install the integrated Novell Client 4.83 and 4.83 SP1 files.
When you have downloaded the integrated Client SP1 files to the directory where you will run the Client SP1 installation, use the following steps to overlay the ZfD 3.2 SP1 Client Update files to the same installation directory.
This will overlay the appropriate client files and provide a single client update installation directory.
Automatic Client Upgrade (ACU.EXE) requires the major or minor internal version in the UNATTEND.TXT file to be incremented. This incrementation triggers the ACU.EXE to install the integrated Novell Client 3.32 and 3.32 SP1 files.
Files in the ZfD 3.2 SP1 Client Update are newer than the shipping version of many files in the Novell Client 3.31, 3.32, 3.32 SP1, 4.81, 4.82, 4.83, and 4.83 SP1. The Novell Client Upgrade installation program, ZENSP.EXE does not prompt for a user decision when it encounters an existing file that is newer than the version it is installing.
For this reason, if you need to use the Client Upgrade for ZfD 3.2 SP1, it should always be the last version of the client files you install. For example, if you currently have version 4.81 installed and you want to upgrade to version 4.83 SP1, you should install 4.83 SP1 first, then the Client Upgrade. Similarly, if you install the Client Upgrade over version 4.81, then you later decide to upgrade to version 4.83 SP1, you will need to install the Client Upgrade again over version 4.83 SP1.
The Client Upgrade can be installed directly over version 4.83 SP1.
If you install ZENSP.EXE on a Windows XP workstation that has the Remote Management
Agent installed and that is configured with an NVIDIA TNT2 62m display driver
(version 28.x, 30.x or later), a blue error screen might occur when you change
the workstation display settings or screen saver.
To avoid this problem, rename \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRISHTI.DLL and reboot the workstation
after you install ZENSP.EXE.
