3.1.3 Installing Workstation Inventory to NetWare Servers While the Inventory Scanner is Running
The ZENworks® for Desktops (ZfD) 3.2 Support Pack 1 (SP1) download contains updates for the ZfD server components contained in the original shipping version of ZENworks for Desktops 3.2. All previous field patches supplied by Novell® Support, including any consolidated field patches, are contained in this support pack.
The purpose of ZfD 3.2 SP1 is to provide a bundle of ZfD 3.2 fixes that have been tested together. ZfD 3.2 also includes changes that support the use of ZfD components on Windows XP Professional workstations. The ZfD 3.2 SP1 files have undergone component testing, core OS testing, internationalization testing, and integration testing with other Novell products.
The ZfD 3.2 SP1 server-side update must be used in conjunction with the ZfD 3.2 SP1 client-side update for user workstations. The client update can be downloaded from TID 2963840 at the Novell Support Connection Web site at http://support.novell.com. For more information, refer to the Readme file, ZFD32SP1CLIENT.TXT, that ships with the client update.
Information about the new features and updates included in the ZfD 3.2 Support
Pack are included in ZfD 3.2 product documentation at
http://www.novell.com/documentation/lg/zdfs/index.html.
Although ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 Preboot Services originally shipped as a separate product, files to update the shipping version of that product are included in this support pack.
The ZfD 3.2 SP1 server-side update (ZFD32SP1SERVER.EXE) can be downloaded from TID 2963839 at the Novell Support Web site at http://support.novell.com. Use the following steps to perform the download:
When installing ZfD 3.2 SP1 to any server, you must make sure that the ZfD 3.2 product has already been installed on the same server. The SP1 NIS Installation program checks the existing ZfD 3.2 installation on a server to verify which components are installed there.
IMPORTANT: Because the ZfD 3.2 SP1 installation program makes changes to the eDirectory schema, you must have Admin rights to [Root] in the eDirectory tree to install ZFD32SP1.
Only those components that were previously installed are updated by the ZfD 3.2 SP1 Installation program. If you want to add other ZfD 3.2 components, you must run the ZfD 3.2 installation program and add these components prior to updating with ZfD 3.2 SP1.
Make sure that you understand the software prerequisites for using this product. This information is displayed in one of the initial installation dialog boxes. You can also find it in the PREREQ.TXT file located in the ZENWORKS\NI\LICENSE\language\ folder of the download package.
Make sure that ConsoleOne® is not running when you install this product.
Before you install ZfD 3.2 SP1 on a Windows* NT* or Windows 2000 server, make sure that you shut down any ZENworks services that might already be running, including Inventory, Workstation Import, Workstation Removal and Imaging Service.
Double-click the NT Services icon in the Windows Control Panel to open the
services console and to verify whether Workstation Import and Workstation
Removal services are running. You can shut down the services at the console.
Double-click the NDS Services icon in the Windows Control Panel to open the
services console and to verify whether ImgServ and ZENImgDS are running. You
can shut down these services at the console.
You can right-click the Inventory Server icon in the System tray > click Exit to stop the Inventory service.
If you will be installing ZfD 3.2 SP1 on a NetWare® server, it will be
necessary to unload JAVA.NLM (at the Server Console, type java -exit). Make
sure you do
this when Java is not being used by another process and the proper Java components
have already been installed. You should also make sure that ConsoleOne is not
running when you install this product.
Before you install the Workstation Inventory component of ZfD 3.2 SP1, make
sure you do the following:
To install ZfD 3.2 SP1 files to the server or servers you need to upgrade, run INSTALL.EXE from the directory where you downloaded ZfD 3.2 SP1 and follow the prompts.
IMPORTANT: Do not install individual files from ZfD 3.2 Support Pack 1 or consolidate the files from this support pack with files from ZfD 3.2 shipping product to expedite a single installation session. This overlay method is not supported.
ZfD 3.2 must be completely installed as shipped (or with support patches applied), followed by the installation of this ZfD 3.2 SP1 server-side update.
Always begin the installation at the topmost level server and proceed with
the next lower-level servers. For example, in an Inventory setup with a Root
Server
and a Leaf Server, complete the Inventory installation at the Root Server, and
then run the installation for the Leaf Server.
If you want to install ZfD 3.2 SP1 into a Novell eDirectory 8.7 tree from a Windows 2000 server that is also running eDirectory 8.7, you first need to delete the C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\NOVELL\JRE directory on the Windows 2000 server.
If you do not delete this directory, the installation will freeze and the following message will be displayed:
[Contents]Checking for previous installations of ZENworks for Desktops
When run in verbose mode (/v), ZENVER.EXE, the file version checking utility
that ships with ZfD, reports the versions of the ZfD files only under the \PUBLIC
directory and below.
If you have installed some ZfD files (for example, ConsoleOne files) in locations other than under the \PUBLIC directory, you can work around the version reporting problem by manually editing ZENVER.TXT (located in the \PUBLIC directory). Search and replace the path to the files you want to check with a path that includes \PUBLIC.
If the scanner is running on the workstations, the ZfD 3.2 SP1 installation
will not overwrite the files.
To work around this situation, follow these steps on the servers where inventory
is installed:
If the scanner is running on the workstations, the ZfD 3.2 SP1 installation
will not overwrite the files.
To work around this situation, follow these steps on the servers where inventory
is installed:
If you want to install ZfD 3.2 SP1 from a Windows workstation or server where ConsoleOne 1.3.4 is installed, you first need to delete the Windows_installation_drive\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\NOVELL\JRE directory on the Windows server or workstation.
If you do not delete this directory, the installation will not proceed after the Novell eDirectory tree selection page of the installation is displayed.
Due to changes in the group policy templates and the differences and additions in Windows XP, problems might occur when group policy settings created on Windows 2000 are pushed to Windows XP desktops.
We recommend that you launch ConsoleOne from a Windows XP workstation or server to edit Windows XP Group Policies or launch ConsoleOne from a Windows 2000 workstation or server to edit Windows 2000 Group Policies.
If you move a server to a different eDirectory container after you install ZfD 3.2, Automatic Workstation Import will no longer work. The following error is included in the WSREG32.LOG file:
Policy not found
This error occurs because the server location for the Workstation Import policy is recorded in ZENWSIMP.NCF. Even though you move the server, the original container location remains in the .NCF file.
To work around this problem, edit the ZENWSIMP.NCF file to show the current server location in the eDirectory tree.
If you launch a DeFrame Terminal session from Novell Portal Services or from the Novell Application Launcher using the Remote Management console on a Windows 98 workstation, the following error is displayed:
Zenrc32 caused an invalid page fault in module Zenrc32.exe
The remote management session ends but the terminal session continues normally.
To work around the problem, launch the OnDemand/DeFrame Terminal Session before you begin the Remote Management session.
If you install ZfD 3.2 and ZfD 3.2 SP1 on a NetWare server that has JVM 1.2.2
or 1.3.x installed, or if you upgrade the JVM to version 1.2.2 or to version
1.3.x on a NetWare server after you install ZfD 3.2 and ZfD 3.2 SP1, the Inventory
server components will not work.
To resolve this problem, download and install the patch that is available with
TID
2962013 in the Knowledgebase at the Novell Support Web Site at http://support.novell.com.
If you modified the Inventory_server_installation_path\PUBLIC\ZENWORKS\SCANSOURCE.INI file after installing ZfD 3.2, the ZfD 3.2 SP1 installation will not overwrite it.
To work around this problem, after you install ZfD 3.2 SP1, you need to manually edit the SCANSOURCE.INI file to add the following entries:
[Contents][SOURCE]
doWMIScan=<retain_the_existing_value>
doDMIScan= TRUE
FullScanSchedule = 10[FLOPPY]
doFloppyScan = TRUE
doWMIFloppyScan = TRUE
doDMIFloppyScan = TRUE[LOGICALDRIVE]
doLogicalDriveScan= TRUE
doWMILogicalDriveScan= TRUE
If you upgrade from ZfD 3.2 SP1 to ZfD 4, the ZfD 4 installation program does not overwrite some ZfD 3.2 SP1 files because the ZfD 3.2 SP1 file dates are later the ZfD 4 file dates.
TID 10076066 at the Novell Support Web site at http://support.novell.com lists the ZfD 3.2 SP1 files that must be renamed to work around this problem.
In addition to this file, the following sources provide additional information about the Support Pack:
To meet the requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Novell is migrating its Windows online help systems from WinHelp to Microsoft HTML Help. HTML Help uses Internet Explorer (version 4.01 SP2 or later) as the viewer for HTML Help. This means that every user workstation running ZfD 3.2 Windows applications such as Novell Application Launcher, Novell Application Explorer, Boot Disk Creator, etc., must have Internet Explorer 4.01 SP2 or later installed to access online help.
The requirement for IE 4.01 SP2 or higher only applies if the workstation where the MS HTML help is being viewed is Win95 or WinNT4. Windows 98/2000/XP machines all have a built-in viewer for MS HTML help that is used by default, so IE isn't called for viewing help on those platforms.
Help topics might not display when you click Help in the Export Report and
GoTo dialog boxes of the Workstation Inventory Report pages of ConsoleOne.
To resolve this problem, download and install ConsoleOne version 1.3.4 that
is available from the Novell Product Downloads Web site at http://download.novell.com.
