ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 Support Pack 3 Known Issues

December 18, 2003

Overview

The information in this Readme file pertains to Novell ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 Support Pack (SP) 3.

This Support Pack contains updates for all components contained in the ZENworks for Desktops product only. If the Support Pack file was downloaded, it must be extracted at the root of the drive because it contains directory paths that could exceed the DOS limits.

The purpose of this Support Pack is to provide a bundle of fixes that have all been tested together. These files have undergone component testing, core OS testing, and integration testing with other Novell products.

This Support Pack includes all fixes from the previous ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 Support Packs; therefore, you do not need to install ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP1 or ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP2 before installing this Support Pack.

Do not install individual files from the Support Pack.

Install the NetWare Support Pack before installing other Novell product support packs like GroupWise and ZENworks for Servers. These Support Packs are included with the Consolidated Support Pack, or they can be downloaded individually from the Consolidated Support Pack file download Web page.

For information on the latest Support Pack issues, see TID 10085454 at the Support Connection Web site .

To order the Support Pack CD, go to the Consolidated Support Pack Ordering Information Web page.

1.0 ZENworks for Desktops Does Not Support Workstations with Multiple Network Interface Cards

ZENworks for Desktops does not support workstations that have more than one network interface card. This hardware configuration may also be called "multi-homed" workstations or "dual NIC" workstations.

The ZENworks for Desktops Remote Management component does not work properly when imported workstations have more than one network interface card.

2.0 Installation Issues

2.1 Installing ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 Might Fail If Running From a Windows 2000 Machine

If you run the ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 installation program from a folder with a long name on a Windows 2000 server or workstation, you might receive the following message:

Launch.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows...

The installation fails at this point.

To avoid the error, make sure you run the installation from a location with a short folder name. We recommend copying the self-extracting file (zfd32sp3.exe) for ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 to the root of a local or server drive, then running the .exe at that location.

2.2 Installing ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 from a Windows 2000 Server with eDirectory 8.7

If you want to install ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 into a Novell eDirectory 8.7 tree from a Windows* 2000 server that is also running eDirectory 8.7, you first need to delete the c:\program files\common files\novell\jre directory on the Windows 2000 server.

If you do not delete this directory, the installation will freeze and the following message will be displayed:

Checking for previous installations of ZENworks for Desktops

2.3 Installing ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 from a Windows Workstation or Server Where ConsoleOne 1.3.4 Is Installed

If you want to install ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 from a Windows workstation or server where ConsoleOne 1.3.4 is installed, you first need to delete the windows_installation_drive\program files\common files\novell\jre directory on the Windows server or workstation.

If you do not delete this directory, the installation does not proceed after the Novell eDirectory tree selection page of the installation is displayed.

2.4 Installing ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 on a Server Where ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 Was Previously Installed

If you want to install ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 over a previous version of ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 or ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP1 (both installed with the Novell Installation Service---NIS), you first need to delete the windows_installation_drive\program files\common files\novell directory on the Windows server or workstation.

If you do not delete this directory, the following error will be displayed:

ZfD 3.2 (ZENworks for Desktops 3.2) has not been installed on the selected tree.

This support Pack must be installed on a tree that has ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 installed.

Please choose a tree that has ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 installed.

You could also see other problems in the installation, such as failure to run or other error messages being displayed.

2.5 Zenver.exe Does Not Check ZENworks for Desktops File Versions in All Directories

When run in verbose mode (/v), zenver.exe, the file version checking utility that ships with ZENworks for Desktops, reports the versions of the ZENworks for Desktops files only under the public directory and below.

If you have installed some ZENworks for Desktops files (for example, ConsoleOne files) in locations other than under the public directory, you can work around the version reporting problem by manually editing zenver.txt (located in the public directory). Search and replace the path to the files you want to check with a path that includes public.

2.6 Installing Workstation Inventory to NetWare Servers While the Inventory Scanner is Running

If the scanner is running on the workstations, the ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 installation will not overwrite the files.

To work around this situation, follow these steps on the servers where inventory is installed:

  1. In Windows Explorer, right-click the scanner file, ntscan32.exe, in the public\zenworks directory > click Properties > NetWare Rights.

  2. Double-click [Root]. In the Trustees option, uncheck the Read [R] and the FileScan [F] rights, click Apply, then click Close.

  3. In Windows Explorer, right-click the Scanner file, winscan.exe, in the public\zenworks directory > click Properties > click NetWare Rights. Follow Step 2.

Wait for some time before proceeding with the installation. This is required if the scanning is still in progress.

If the scanner does not complete the scanning process or if the Scanner crashes, see the Workstation Inventory Troubleshooting documentation at the ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 documentation Web site.

  4. Complete the ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 installation.

  5. In Windows Explorer, right-click the public\zenworks\ntscan32.exe file > click Properties > click NetWare Rights.

  6. Double-click [Root]. In the Trustees option, check the Read [R] and FileScan [F] rights, click Apply, then click Close.

  7. In Windows Explorer, right-click the public\zenworks\winscan.exe file > click Properties > NetWare Rights.

  8. Double-click [Root]. In the Trustees option, check the Read [R] and FileScan [F] rights, click Apply, then click Close.

2.7 Installing Workstation Inventory to Windows NT/2000 Servers While the Inventory Scanner is Running

If the scanner is running on the workstations, the ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 installation will not overwrite the files.

To work around this situation, follow these steps on the servers where inventory is installed:

  1. In Windows Explorer, right-click ntscan32.exe in the public\zenworks directory > click Properties > click Security > Permissions.

  2. Click Add, select Administrators, then click Add. In the Permissions box, select Full Control, then click OK.

  3. From the list, click Everyone, click Remove, click OK, then OK again.

  4. In Windows Explorer, right-click winscan.exe in the public\zenworks directory > click Properties > Security > Permissions.

  5. Click Add, select Administrators, then click Add. In the Permissions box, select Full Control, then click OK.

  6. From the list, click Everyone, click Remove, click OK, then click OK again.

  7. Complete the ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 installation.

  8. In Windows Explorer, right-click ntscan32.exe in the public\zenworks directory > click Properties > click Security > Permissions.

  9. Click Add, select Everyone, then click Add. In the Permissions box, select Full Control, then click OK.

  10. From the list, click Administrators, click Remove, click OK, then click OK again.

  11. In Windows Explorer, right-click winscan.exe in the public\zenworks directory > click Properties > Security > Permissions.

  12. Click Add, select Everyone, then click Add. In the Permissions box, select Full Control, then click OK.

  13. From the list, click Administrators, click Remove, click OK, then click OK again.

2.8 Installing From a Windows NT/2000 Workstation That Has a Pentium 4 Processor

If you choose to run the ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 installation program from a Windows NT/2000 workstation that has Pentium 4 processor, you will encounter an error during the installation, but the installation will proceed.

To resolve this problem, download and install the latest version of JRE 1.2.2 or JRE 1.3.1 from the Java 2 Standard Edition download Web site on the Windows NT/2000 workstation that has the Pentium 4 processor before you run the ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 installation program.

2.9 Installing This Support Pack on NetWare 6.5 Servers.

ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 Support Pack 3 has been tested on NetWare 6.5 servers where Support Pack 1 has been installed.

If the Workstation Inventory component fails to start after installing on a NetWare 6.5 server, edit sys:\system\autoexec.ncf to add the following line after the zfdstart.ncf entry:

sys:\system\startinv.ncf

3.0 Workstation Import Issues

If you move a server to a different eDirectory container after you install ZENworks for Desktops 3.2, Automatic Workstation Import no longer works. The following error is included in the wsreg32.log file:

Policy not found.

This error occurs because the server location for the Workstation Import policy is recorded in zenwsimp.ncf. Even though you move the server, the original container location remains in the .ncf file.

To work around this problem, edit the zenwsimp.ncf file to show the current server location in the eDirectory tree.

4.0 Application Management Issues

If you enable personal folders as you configure the Novell Application Launcher snap-in for ConsoleOne, users with the Windows XP operating system who rename folders in Application Explorer view will notice that the act of renaming a personal folder actually creates a new folder instead. The issue occurs only when the following steps are used:

  1. Enable personal folders in ConsoleOne.

  2. From a Windows XP workstation, open the Application Explorer view.

  3. Right-click the personal folder > click Explore.

  4. Create one or more new folders > rename a folder.

    A new folder is created.

Users can work around this problem by closing the Application Explorer view and then reopening it. The view will open without displaying a duplicate folder with the original name.

5.0 Remote Management Issues

5.1 Launching DeFrame from Win98 Causes an Error

If you launch a DeFrame terminal session from Novell Portal Services or from the Novell Application Launcher using the Remote Management console on a Windows 98 workstation, the following error is displayed:

Zenrc32 caused an invalid page fault in module Zenrc32.exe.

The Remote Management session ends but the terminal session continues normally.

To work around the problem, launch the OnDemand/DeFrame terminal session before you begin the Remote Management session.

5.2 ATI Display Adapters Do Not Support the Screen Blanking Feature

ATI display adapters do not support the Screen Blanking feature of Remote Management. The managed workstation screen will not be blanked when these adapters are used.

6.0 Workstation Inventory Issues

6.1 JVM Upgrades Are Not Compatible with ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 or ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3

If you install ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 and ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 on a NetWare server that has JVM* 1.2.2 or 1.3.x installed, or if you upgrade the JVM to version 1.2.2 or to version 1.3.x on a NetWare server after you install ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 and ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3, the Inventory server components will not work.

To resolve this problem, download and install the zd3xjvm.exe patch. This patch is referenced in TID 2962013 in the Knowledgebase at Novell Support.

6.2 DBExport Fails to Run in an Isolated Mode on Windows NT/2000 Servers

When you install ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 Workstation Inventory on a Windows NT/2000 server, the installation program will automatically copy the JRE 1.2.2_011 to the server. DBExport might not work if you have installed other JREs separately.

Use the following procedure if DBExport fails to run in an isolated mode on a Windows NT/2000 server.

  1. Append the following entry to SYS share\public\zenworks\wminv\bin\javadir.bat:

    set path=%java_dir%\bin;%java_dir%\njclv2\bin;%path%
  2. Enter the following string at the server console prompt to run dbexport.bat:

    DBEXPORT <configuration_filename>.exp <csv_filename>.csv

where <configuration_filename>.exp is an existing file that contains the data export settings and <csv_filename>.csv is the filename where the data exported from the database will be stored.

6.3 Software Inventory Report Shows Multiple Copies of Software Actually Installed Only Once

If the software inventory report shows more than one installed copy of a software program that was actually installed on a workstation only once, edit the sys:\public\zenworks\swrules.ini file on the Inventory server and add the following contents at the end of the file:

[SOFTWARE]
doMaxVersionSWScan=True

If the swrules.ini file already has a [SOFTWARE] section, you only need to add this new content in the existing section.

NOTE:  By default, the value of doMaxVersionSWScan is set to FALSE.

6.4 Workstation Inventory Continuously Scans the Workstation Floppy Drive

If the Workstation Inventory scanner continuously scans the workstation floppy disk, edit the sys:\public\zenworks\swrules.ini file on the Inventory server and add the following contents at the end of the file:

[SOFTWARE]
doMSIScan=TRUE

If the swrules.ini file already has a [SOFTWARE] section, you only to add this new content in the existing section.

NOTE:  By default, the value of doMSIScan is set to FALSE.

6.5 Inventory Service Fails to Start on a Windows NT/2000 Inventory Server With a Pentium 4 Processor.

If you install ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 Workstation Inventory on a Windows NT/2000 server that has a Pentium 4 processor, the JRE that is installed with the component does not support the Pentium 4 processor. Consequently, the Inventory service fails to start. No error message is displayed on the server.

Use the following steps on the Windows NT/2000 Inventory server to resolve the problem:

  1. Download the latest version of JRE 1.2.2 or JRE 1.3.1 from the Java 2 Standard Edition download Web site.

  2. If the Inventory service is running, stop it.

On a Windows NT Inventory Server: At the Windows Control Panel, double-click Services, select ZENworks Inventory Service, then click Stop.

On a Windows 2000 Inventory Server: At the Windows Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, double-click Services, select ZENworks Inventory Service, then click Stop.

  3. Install the downloaded JRE on the Inventory server.

  4. Copy zenws.dll from workstation_inventory_installation_directory\zenworks\jre\1.2\bin to JRE_installation_directory\bin.

JRE_installation_directory is the location where you have installed the downloaded JRE.

  5. Copy zencommon.jar and zenws.jar from workstation_inventory_installation_directory\zenworks\jre\1.2\lib to JRE_installation_directory\lib.

  6. Copy the njclv2 directory from workstation_inventory_installation_directory\zenworks\jre\1.2 to JRE_installation_directory.

  7. Edit workstation_inventory_installation_directory\public\zenworks\wminv\bin\zensetenv.ini to change all instances of workstation_inventory_installation_directory\zenworks\jre\1.2 to JRE_installation_directory.

If the JRE_installation_directory pathname contains a space, you must enter the complete pathname containing JRE_installation_directory within double quotes.

For example: If the recommended JRE is installed in c:\program files\java, change workstation_inventory_installation_directory\zenworks\jre\1.2\lib\zenws.jar to "c:\program files\java\lib\zenws.jar".

  8. Edit workstation_inventory_installation_directory\public\zenworks\wminv\bin\javadir.bat to change all instances of workstation_inventory_installation_directory\zenworks\jre\1.2 to JRE_installation_directory.

  9. Start the Inventory service.

On a Windows NT Inventory Server: At the Windows Control Panel, double-click Services, select ZENworks Inventory Service, then click Start.

On a Windows 2000 Inventory Server: At the Windows Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, double-click Services, select ZENworks Inventory Service, then click Start.

6.6 Inventory Service Fails in Some Circumstances When Running on Novell Cluster Services

If you are running ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 Inventory services on a Novell Cluster Services node and then you migrate services from that cluster node to another cluster node, the Inventory service does not start on the new node.

If the cluster services fail over to a secondary node and then fail back to the primary node, Inventory services fail to start on the primary node.

To resolve this problem, use the workaround information available in TID 10087682 in the Novell Knowledgebase.

7.0 Upgrade Issues

7.1 ZENworks for Desktops 4 Upgrade Does Not Overwrite ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 Files

If you upgrade from ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 to ZENworks for Desktops 4, the ZENworks for Desktops 4 installation program does not overwrite some ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 files because the ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 file dates are later than the ZENworks for Desktops 4 file dates.

TID 10076066 in the Novell Knowledgebase lists the ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 files that must be renamed to work around this problem.

8.0 Changes Since the Last Support Pack

For information on the ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 issues addressed by fixes in Support Pack 3, see TID 10081470 in the Novell Knowledgebase.
