ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 Support Pack 3 --- Novell Client for Windows 9x Update

December 18, 2003

Overview

The information in this Readme file pertains to Novell® ZENworks® for Desktops 3.2 Support Pack (SP) 3. The Support Pack consists of two separate updates: the server update and the client update. The client update contains updates needed by workstations that are using the Novell ClientTM in conjunction with the ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 Server Update.

The purpose of the client update is to provide a bundle of client fixes that have been tested together but are not delivered with the Novell Client for Windows 95/98 version 3.32, 3.32 SP1, 3.32 SP2, or 3.4.

This support pack includes all fixes from the previous ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 Support Packs; therefore, you do not need to install ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP1 or ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP2 before installing this support pack.

If you download one of the support pack installation files, you need to extract it at the root of the drive because it contains directory paths that could exceed the DOS limits.

Do not install individual files from either of the updates included in ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3. All of the files must be installed as a complete support pack.

Install the NetWare® 6 Support Pack 4 before you install this or any other Novell product support packs (like GroupWise® or ZENworks for Servers). Product support packs are included with the Consolidated Support Pack CD, or they can be downloaded individually from the Consolidated Support Pack download Web page.

As a general rule, when you update ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 using the Consolidated Support Pack, you should apply the server update files on the ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 back-end server prior to updating the workstation with Novell Client Support Pack files.

If a new version of the Novell Client is released outside of a Consolidated Support Pack before a new ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 Support Pack is released, you need to make sure that the ZENworks for Desktops Server software is properly updated with the new client files before you update the workstations with the new client. The process for performing an update in this scenario is explained in TID 10060646 in the Knowledgebase at the Support Connection Web site.

For information on the latest Consolidated Support Pack issues, see TID 10085454 at the Support Connection Web site .

To order the Support Pack CD, see the Consolidated Support Pack Ordering Information Web page.

1.0 Downloading and Preparing for the ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 Client Update

When installing the client update to any workstation, you must make sure that Novell Client version 3.32 SP2 (minimum) or version 3.4 has already been installed there.

1.1 Downloading and Extracting the Client Update

To download the ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 client-side update from Consolidated Support Pack 10 CD or from the Consolidated Support Pack Web site, complete the following steps:

  1. Follow the prompts to copy the download file, zfd32sp3.exe, to the network path of your choice. This is the location where the self-extracting file will be decompressed.

IMPORTANT:  Although you can extract the client update files to any directory you choose when you download them, if you use a Windows XP workstation to browse to the downloaded client update files, the Windows browser cannot find the files if any folder name in the path is longer than 8 characters.

  2. From the download location, double-click zfd32sp3.exe, then enter Y to extract the file contents to the current location.

IMPORTANT:  If you chose to download zfd32sp3.exe to a location that includes a space in the path, for example, c:\documents and settings\tsmith\my documents\my downloads, the .exe will fail to extract. To work around this problem, run the .exe from a DOS command prompt.

The .exe will extract a folder named zfd32sp3, which will contain two subfolders:

1.2 Client Update Installation Prerequisites

Before you install the client update to any workstation, you must make sure that the Novell Client version 3.32, 3.32 SP1, 3.32 SP2, or 3.4 has already been installed there. ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 must also be completely installed as shipped or with SP1 or SP2 applied. If this software is already installed, you can install the ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 Client Update.

The client update installation program checks the existing client installation on a workstation to verify which components are installed there. Only those components that were previously installed are updated by the client update program. If you want to add other workstation components, you must run the Novell Client for Windows 9x installation program and add these components to the installed client prior to updating it with this support pack.

Make sure that you understand the software prerequisites for using this product in conjunction with ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3. The prerequisite information is displayed in one of the initial ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 server installation dialog boxes. You can also find it in the prereq.txt file located in the zenservr\zenworks\ni\license\language folder of the server update download package for ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3.

2.0 Installing the ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 Client Update

After you have downloaded and extracted zfd32sp3.exe, use the following steps to install client update files to the Windows NT/2000/XP workstation (with Novell Client version 3.32, 3.32 SP1, 3.32 SP2, or 3.4 installed) that you need to upgrade.

  1. Locate the zen9x directory in the temporary location on the server where you downloaded and extracted zfd32sp3.exe.

  2. Browse to the appropriate zen9x\ibm_language folder to find the zensp.exe client update installation file for your workstations.

NOTE:  Before zensp.exe is executed on a workstation, make sure that Remote Management sessions are not running there.

  3. Run the zensp.exe installation program on user workstations.

You can do this either by distributing it to workstations or users as an Application object or you can provide rights for the users to browse to the server location of zensp.exe so they can run it at their convenience.

NOTE:  Users can run zensp.exe only if they are members of the Administrators group or if the Application object is configured to allow zensp.exe to run at an unsecure system impersonation.

The zensp.exe program copies updated files directly to the local workstation, then prompts the user to reboot the workstation and apply the update.

3.0 Known Issues

For a list of installation issues and other known issues and changes made since the last Support Pack, see zfd32_iss.txt located at the root of the Support Pack.

3.1 Client Upgrade Path

Files in the ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 SP3 Client Update are newer than the shipping version of many files in the Novell Client versions 3.32, 3.32 SP1, 3.32 SP2, and 3.4. The Novell Client Upgrade installation program, zensp.exe does not prompt for a user decision when it encounters an existing file that is newer than the version it is installing.
