15.3 Updating Post Offices

To update a post office, you need to install the GroupWise 7 POA and run it against the post office. The POA uses a new 7 version of the post office dictionary file (gwpo.dc) to update the post office database to version 7.

NetWare and Windows:

After you’ve installed the NetWare or Windows POA, you might need to manually copy the new GroupWise Windows client views from the software distribution directory to the post office directory. This could be necessary if the Agent Installation program did not have access to the software distribution directory during the installation process or if you update your agent software before you update your software distribution directory with the latest Windows client software.

15.3.1 Installing and Starting the POA

The POA cannot be running while you update it. Users who connect to the post office via client/server (TCP/IP) cannot access the post office while the POA is shut down.

IMPORTANT:The MTA for the domain that the post office belongs to should be updated and running before you install and start the POA.

To install and start the POA:

  1. Start the Agent Installation program.

    NetWare:

To install the POA to a NetWare server, make sure the workstation has access to both the post office directory and the NetWare server where you want to install the POA.

If you are installing from the GroupWise 7 Administrator for NetWare/Windows CD, insert the CD in the CD drive, run setup.exe at the root of the CD to start the GroupWise Installation program, then click Install Components > Install GroupWise Agents.

If you are installing from the software distribution directory, run install.exe in the \agents subdirectory to start the Agent Installation program.

    Linux:

Run install at the root of the GroupWise 7 Administrator for Linux CD for Linux or at the root of the software distribution directory to start the GroupWIse Installation program.

    Windows:

If you are installing from the GroupWise 7 Administrator for NetWare/Windows CD, insert the CD in the CD drive, run setup.exe at the root of the CD to start the GroupWise Installation program, then click Install Components > Install GroupWise Agents.

If you are installing from the software distribution directory, run install.exe in the \agents subdirectory.

To streamline the update process on NetWare and Windows, you can run the Agent Installation program (agents\install.exe) with the /copyonly startup switch, which copies the updated agent software files but does not perform any other agent configuration. On Linux, the Installation program offers separate file copy and configuration options to streamline the update process.

  2. Follow the instructions for your platform to install the GroupWise 7 POA to each post office in your GroupWise system.

  3. Start the POA for the post office so that the post office database (wphost.db) is updated to GroupWise 7.

  4. Before you run GroupWise 7 clients against the post office, make sure that the post office database has been updated by checking the Database Version field on the Identification property page of the Post Office object in ConsoleOne.

  5. Continue with Copying the GroupWise Views to the Post Office Directory.

15.3.2 Copying the GroupWise Views to the Post Office Directory

GroupWise 7 includes new views for the GroupWise Windows client. When the POA starts, it updates the post office database and also attempts to update the client views in the post office directory. To do so, it requires access to the software distribution directory. If it doesn’t have access, you must manually copy the views.

You can check whether or not the POA was able to update the views by verifying the existence of the us02*.vew files in the x:\post_office\ofviews\win directory, where x:\po is the path to the post office directory.

If the us02*.vew files do not exist or have older dates, copy all files from

z:\software\client\win32\ofviews\win

to

x:\post_office\ofviews\win

where z:\software is the path to the software distribution directory and x:\post_office is the path to the post office directory.

You can also perform this task in ConsoleOne®. See Refreshing the Client View Files in the Post Office in Post Offices in the GroupWise 7 Administration Guide.
