6.4 Editing a File

NOTE:When possible, Novell recommends using the Filr 2.0 Desktop Client, which facilitates editing through standard desktop applications and ensures that file changes are automatically synchronized on the network.

You can download a file to your workstation to edit it, or, depending on the browser you are using, you might be able to edit it by using Filr’s edit-in-place functionality.

6.4.1 Downloading and Editing a File

To download and edit a file through your web browser, do the following:

Download the file to your workstation, as described in Section 6.8.1, Downloading Single Files.
Edit the file as desired, then save the file with the original name.
In Filr, navigate to the folder where the file is located, then click Add Files.

A drag-and-drop window is displayed.
Drag the file into the drag-and-drop window.
In the File Conflicts dialog box that appears, click Overwrite Files to replace the file that is currently in Filr with the one you are uploading.

The file is replaced with the file that you uploaded.

6.4.2 Editing Files with Edit-in-Place

Prerequisites

To use Filr’s edit-in-place functionality, you must have the following:

A browser that supports the Java browser plug-in.
File system rights on the network file server.
The Editor or Contributor role in Filr.
An editing application installed on your workstation for the file type that you plan to edit.

For information about how to view the file types that are currently supported for edit-in-place, see Section A.8.1, Viewing Which File Types Are Supported for Edit-In-Place.

IMPORTANT:To edit files on a Mac, you must use LibreOffice or OpenOffice as your document editor.

The WebDAV implementation in Microsoft’s Office for Mac product is not compatible with Filr’s edit-in-place functionality.

Browser Support for Edit-in-Place Functionality Is Waning

Filr’s edit-in-place functionality requires support for the Java browser plug-in.

Neither Chrome version 45 and later nor the Edge browser support the Java plug-in. (For more information, see this official statement from Oracle.)

Novell anticipates that over time, other browsers will discontinue Java plug-in support, which will further impact support for Filr’s edit-in-place functionality.

Editing a File in Place

Ensure that the prerequistes are met, then do the following:

Navigate to the location of the file that you want to edit.
Click the drop-down arrow next to the file that you want to edit, then click Edit This File.

IMPORTANT:If Filr 2.0 recognizes that your browser doesn’t support the Java browser plug-in, the Edit This File option is not displayed.

If Filr 2.0 doesn’t recognize that you are using a non-supportive browser, the Edit This File option is displayed but will not work. Your browser might or might not display an error message stating that Java plug-ins are not supported.

If your browser supports the Java plug-in, the file is launched in the file editor specified for the file type. For information on how to change the application that Filr launches for the file type, see Section A.8, Unable to Edit Files.
(Conditional) If Filr prompts you to provide your Filr credentials, specify the user name and password that you use to log in to Filr, then click OK.
Edit the file.
Save your changes.
Exit the application.
