NetWare 6.5 SP8 introduces support for installing NetWare as a guest operating system on a Xen virtual machine host server. Virtualized NetWare 6.5 SP8 runs in paravirtual mode, which means the operating system has been modified to take advantage of the virtualization environment. Typically, operating systems running in paravirtual mode enjoy better performance than those requiring full virtualization mode.
The procedure for installing virtualized NetWare 6.5 SP8 also uses the NetWare 6.5 SP8 installation program and media, but additional setup steps are necessary to prepare the Xen host server and to create a virtual machine. For more information, see the Virtualization with Xen guide.
In NetWare 6.5 SP8, in-place and remote server upgrades are no longer supported. To upgrade from NetWare 6.5 SP6 to NetWare 6.5 SP8, you must perform a support pack update. This update requires Support Pack 8 for NetWare 6.5, which you can download from the Novell Patches Web site. For more information, see Section 3.0, Upgrading to NetWare 6.5 SP8.
The options for installing and updating NetWare 6.5 SP8 servers are summarized in Table 2-1.

Upgrade of an existing NetWare server to NetWare 6.5 SP8 |
You have an existing NetWare 5 or later server and you want to upgrade it to NetWare 6.5 SP8 locally from the server itself, or remotely from a workstation. |
Local and remote upgrades are not supported in NetWare 6.5 SP8. Use the Support Pack script (see Section 3.0, Upgrading to NetWare 6.5 SP8). |

Novell also offers server migration and consolidation tools to assist you in moving valuable data from older servers to new OES servers. For more information, see:
As you deploy NetWare 6.5 SP8 with various add-on products and services, you should be aware of the product-specific issues described in this section.
By default, the version of eDirectory™ installed on new NetWare 6.5 SP8 servers is eDirectory 8.8.4.
When you update an existing NetWare 6.5 SP6 or earlier server to NetWare 6.5 SP8 by using the Support Pack script, the version of eDirectory remains at 8.7.3. After updating the server, you can upgrade to eDirectory 8.8.4 by following the instructions in Migrating to eDirectory 8.8 SP3
in the Novell eDirectory 8.8 Installation Guide.
When you install a new NetWare 6.5 SP8 server and choose to install Novell iManager, the version installed is iManager 2.7.2. This is the latest cross-platform version of iManager, which allows you to manage both NetWare 6.5 and OES Linux servers.
If you are updating an existing NetWare 6.5 server to SP8 and the server has iManager 2.5 or 2.6 installed, the version is automatically updated to iManager 2.7.2.
If you are updating an existing NetWare 6.5 server to SP8 and the server has iManager 2.0.2 installed, the version of iManager is not updated. This preserves the user password self-management capability for Virtual Office 1.0.
If you want to upgrade iManager 2.0.2 to iManager 2.7.2, do a product install of iManager 2.7.2 using the NetWare 6.5 SP8 overlay CDs after you have applied the SP8 update in NWCONFIG.
Virtual Office is included as part of NetWare 6.5 SP8.
Starting in NetWare 6.5 SP4, the administration interface for Virtual Office was removed from iManager and incorporated into Virtual Office 1.5 and later. You can install Virtual Office 1.5 or 1.6 on a NetWare 6.5 SP3 server. However, if you are still using iManager 2.0.2, the Virtual Office plug-ins are disabled. When you upgrade a previous installation of Virtual Office to Virtual Office 1.5 or 1.6, the Virtual Office install migrates configuration settings for virtual teams and other services. Bookmarks are not migrated. For more information, see the Novell Open Enterprise Server Virtual Office Configuration Guide.
The Novell QuickFinder™ Server replaces the NetWare Web Search Server. QuickFinder Server is a Web and file system search engine that includes several new and enhanced features. If you install QuickFinder Server on an existing NetWare server with Web Search Server installed, the QuickFinder install recognizes the older installation and migrates the configuration settings and indexes that QuickFinder uses. However, you must regenerate the old indexes before they can be searched. For more information, see the OES 2: Novell QuickFinder Server 5.0 Administration Guide.
If you are upgrading from NetWare 6.5 FCS or later, Novell recommends that you run NWCONFIG and use Product Options to apply the SP8 updates from the update CD. This method upgrades QuickFinder to the current version. It also detects the version of iManager and applies either iManager 2.0.2 or iManager 2.7 updates as required.
For more information, see Section 4.25.5, Installing Product Updates.
The following components have been removed from the NetWare 6.5 product and can no longer be selected for installation in NetWare 6.5 SP8:
Novell Nsure® Audit Starter Pack Server (removed in NetWare 6.5 SP6)
The pattern install for Novell Nsure Audit Starter Pack Server has been removed.
Novell Nterprise™ Branch Office Rsync Server (removed in NetWare 6.5 SP4)
The pattern install for the Nterprise Branch Office - Central Office Server has been removed. You can upgrade an existing NBO Central Office Server, but you cannot install a new one.
Novell Nsure UDDI Server (removed in NetWare 6.5 SP4)
In previous versions of NetWare 6.5, this component was installed with the exteNd™ J2EE Web Application Server, Apache*/Tomcat Server, and Novell Nsure Audit Starter Pack Server patterns. Only the UDDI Server component has been removed; the three server patterns remain available except in NetWare 6.5 SP6 and later, in which the Nsure Audit Server pattern has been removed.
Unless otherwise noted, all other previously available products and functionality of NetWare 6.5 continue to be available in NetWare 6.5 SP8.
